Our Story

27 Years and Counting!

Established in 1993, Angelwood Gallery is the oldest privately-owned gallery in Northwest Ohio. Angelwood Gallery features regional artists working in ceramics, glass, wood, paint, metal, jewelry, mixed media, and photography, with a focus on the artwork of owner Julie A. Beutler, an award-winning ceramic artist, specializing in functional stoneware.

Angelwood Gallery is the perfect place to find unique, handmade pieces for your home, garden or office. Our beautiful and functional items make one-of-a-kind gifts for special occasions or everyday use. The gallery features several exhibitions throughout the year, with new artwork added each month.  Our artists are dedicated to the collective vision of bringing you quality art at an affordable price.

Grand Rapids, Ohio

The Place We Call Home

Angelwood Gallery is in historic Grand Rapids, Ohio, just a short scenic drive from Toledo, Bowling Green, and Defiance. This charming small town rests on the banks of the scenic Maumee River, and is complete with a towpath, shops, a brewery, bed & breakfasts, and even a kayak and canoe livery!

Our gallery is located in the downtown business district, just one shining gem among several unique shops and popular locally owned restaurants. With over 20 merchants in town, including shops which specialize in bath & body goods, antiques, women's apparel, local honey, candy, fiber, books, and home decor, there's something for everyone.

Grand Rapids is also surrounded by many opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. A bike (and walking) trail winds along the river, a local State Park offers camping, fishing, and boating, and a Toledo Metropark features a re-enactment style canal boat ride! Grand Rapids is the perfect town for a charming day trip full of shopping, eating, and exploring. We hope to see you there!

Julie Beutler

Ceramic Artist & Gallery Owner

Julie Beutler is the proprietor of Angelwood Gallery as well as a celebrated ceramic artist and instructor. Her passion for pots, mostly functional, comes from her strong belief that we should surround ourselves everyday with beauty.  Using handmade things in our day to day life creates a connection between the maker and the consumer. She hopes that, right now, someone is eating a homemade meal from one of her bowls or sipping their morning coffee from one of her mugs. It is this connection, to art and to one another, that she strives to create in her life and work.

Born and raised in Michigan, Julie knew from an early age that art would play a big part in her life. She attended Siena Heights University in Michigan, where she studied fine art. While there, she also traveled to Italy to study in a program with Villanova University. She graduated from Siena Heights Magna Cum Laude and was honored with Siena's Outstanding Graduate in Art Award.

After graduation, she signed the lease for Angelwood Gallery and became a member of the Grand Rapids communtiy. Shortly thereafter, in the summer of 1993, Angelwood Gallery officially opened for business.

From the desire to share her love of clay, she began to offer pottery classes at her studio located behind the gallery. Teaching students how to create pottery soon became as strong a passion as creating pots themselves. In 1997, Julie began teaching pottery classes at The 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, Ohio, and in 1998, she was promoted to Pottery Director. She has been teaching students of all ages for over 20 years.

During her time as an artist and teacher, Julie has become an interwoven and active part of the Grand Rapid's community. She hopes to be able to continue creating and teaching here for many years to come.
